THE CULTURE CORNER

"JUST KEEP SWIMMING" - Dory, finding nemo

Black Lives Matter is a decentralized movement advocating for nonviolent civil disobedience in protest against incidents of police brutality and all racially motivated violence against African American people. Black Lives Matter began in 2013 following the death of Trayvon Martin and each year since we’ve continued the pained outcry hoping to end the war on black people ignited by the police and media.

Why is it that “all lives” or “blue lives” didn’t matter until Black lives did?

What is it about America that is threatened by a Black life?

Black lives were brought over here on the bottom of slave ships, in bondage, welcomed to chains and whips. Black lives were enslaved in America for 400 years erasing any trace of their culture, their pride, and their mother tongue. Black lives were considered as 3/5 of a person. Black lives were segregated and still are starved of opportunities. Black lives were the strange fruit found hanging in the trees, where were “all lives” then?

America has tried to ignore the elephant in the room and continue to sweep its racist ways under the rug, but through our protests we are here to say enough is enough.

Protesting is the most American thing an American can do. However, when its Black citizens participate in the protests they are criminalized. All lives didn’t matter until Black people started to love themselves. All lives can’t matter until Black lives do. If all lives truly mattered then they would be marching to help protect the black lives. Protesting is what protects the rights of Americans, not fighting overseas in a war. Protests gained America’s independence from Great Britain, protests gained women’s rights, protests gained civil rights, and protesting the systemic racism this country was built on, will gain us our rights..., we just have to keep on swimming.

Black is Inspiration, Black is Love, Black is Strength, Black is Beauty, Black is Regal, Black is Rich, in history, purpose, and lineage.
